Meal Preparation and Kitchen Use

We find that most groups do an excellent job of planning and eating well during their stay with us. Good Works does not provide food for Work Groups. We do provide pantry and refrigerator/freezer space as well as kitchen facilities for you to prepare your meals.

When you arrive, we turn our kitchen over to you. It is equipped with an electric stove, a microwave, a dishwasher, and two sinks laid out on a large u-shaped countertop. Although we have plenty of dishware for your group, handling drinking cups can be awkward. The creativity of your meal coordinator will be most helpful at this point.

We ask that you include those who are living in the Hannah House in your meals. It will be too difficult to prepare two separate meals and this also becomes a blessing to them. As our contribution to this, you may use the food that is in our food pantry. (We will be including members of your group in our meals at the Timothy House on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. They will not need to take food with them.) We encourage you to do your shopping after you get here, though you may want to bring some things based on your arrival schedule. Because of the abundance of some items in our pantry, you will not need to purchase these. After you determine what food you will need, you can shop at Foodland and Seaman’s, two locally owned stores that are close by. There is also a Krogers and a Walmart not too far away. By purchasing your food in Athens you will also be helping the community by strengthening this economy.

Planning a good breakfast is essential to fuel the work of the day, but you will want to keep it simple to save on time. Lunches are usually comprised of sandwiches and fruit. Suppers can be more elaborate. We also encourage you to think of healthy snacks for mid-morning and afternoon. It is also very important that you drink water throughout the day because of the heat and hard work. Drink breaks and water bottles are a great help.

We encourage sharing responsibility in the preparation and clean up of meals. It is good to have a designated Meal Coordinator who will intentionally enlist the help of others. Click here for a form you may use as a guideline for signing up others to help with meals. The people in the house are available to help you with the preparation of the meal in any way you need them. We have a kitchen and dining room, as well as a large picnic shelter to share our meals together. (No food is permitted in the dorm rooms.) Eating together is best, and we would love to have the chance to interact and converse with you over mealtimes where groups, staff, and residents all sit together as equals. While you are with us, you may want to ask us about our “giving-thanks tradition.”

During the Summer Service Program, part of your experience will be sponsoring dinner at Friday Night Life. This is a community event that Good Works hosts each week. We have found that this is a highlight for the groups that come to serve with us. You will be preparing and serving food to approximately 125 people. You can get details about this from Sherilyn Weinkauf at sherilyn@good-works.net or 740/594-3339. At other times of the year, you may be here on a Friday for your Work Camp. If another group is sponsoring this event while you are here, we simply ask you to come and enjoy the meal and fellowship with us. If your group will be a large one, we will need to let the sponsoring group know that you will be here. During the months of October to April, Friday Night Life is held at the Plains United Methodist Church. From April to October it is held on the Good Works Luhrig Road property.
