Walk for the Homeless

Help Raise Awareness
And Funds for Ohio’s
Rural Homeless

What is it?
A walk to educate the public (children, youth and adults) about the reality of homelessness and poverty in southeastern Ohio and to generate needed financial support for the Good Works Timothy House, a shelter for the rural homeless in Athens, Ohio. The Timothy House serves homeless people from nine southeast Ohio counties.

How will the money be used?
All the money raised by individuals participating in the Walk will be used to assist the homeless through the Good Works Timothy House, where almost 75% of our funds come from private donations.

How can I get involved?

  1. Participate in the Walk. We are asking each participant to find 10 people who will sponsor them on the Walk by donating $10 each.
  2. BE A CHEER LEADER!! Help promote the walk by asking friends to participate in the Walk with you. Ask each of your friends to find 10 sponsors of their own.

The January 13th 2007 WALK FOR THE HOMELESS  included 5 different educational WALKS, which went on at the same time. Each walk left around 9:15 am and returned to the First UMC around 11:30 pm. The length of each WALK varied, but most WALKS were under 3 miles. As in years past, current and former homeless people served as guides in the educational process.  Here is what happened:

·        THE HOUSING WALK Homeless people need housing! Participants discussed and explored the issues of public housing, affordable housing and what it meant by decent and safe housing.  In partnership with our local Housing Authority, participants engaged in an experience which dramatized the challenge homeless people and others in poverty have to find a place to live.

·        THE EMPLOYMENT WALK. Homeless people need jobs!  Participants engaged in a presentation and discussion on the issues homeless people and others struggling with poverty face in employment in general and here in rural Appalachia. Participants walked to Wendy's on Richland Avenue and met an area employer who is making a difference in the lives of many homeless people.

·        THE MYSTERY WALK was designed for participants who have a sense of adventure and were willing to participate in “the unexpected”. This educational experience parallelled  may of the unexpected "turns in the road" that homeless people face.

·        THE MINI WALK was especially designed for citizens who wanted to support the WALK but who found it very difficult to walk. The mini WALK was about 100 feet. A presentation at the Athens Parking Garage on the reasons why people become homeless was followed by a film at the Presbyterian Church called WAGING A LIVING.

·        THE SHELTER WALK was to the Timothy House where participants had a chance to see our shelter and met some of our staff and volunteers.  The WALK then went to the Central UM Church where current and former homeless people spoke about their experiences and how Good Works has helped them. The Good Works staff led an educational talk about the issues homeless people face while living in a shelter.  Sleeping in rooms with strangers, living with the stress of different personalities, house rules, eating, privacy and living with depression are only a few issues that were explored.
