THINKING ABOUT TAKING A SHORT TERM MISSION TRIP?
TRAINING IN MISSION THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Good Works began serving the needs of the rural poor and homeless in 1981. Since 1995, Good Works has been welcoming churches and secular organizations (both youth and adult groups) to come to Athens, Ohio and experience service to our neighbors struggling with poverty. Our intention is to provide a range of "hands-on" experiences through which the Body of Christ and others can learn how to DO the Word together and glorify God through their good works (Matthew 5:16)!
Our vision is for you to come to the end of your short-term mission experience with Good Works and say … “we could do this where we live!” Our short term mission experiences are intended to be reproducible. Our goals are simple:
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. DO what it says" -- James 1:22
And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds" -- Hebrews 10:24
Over the years, we have worked with a wide range of different organizations and denominations. For a list of these churches, click here. Each year, we provide opportunities to serve and training for an estimated 300-500 people. We welcome youth and adult groups, college age groups, inter-generational groups. We even welcome family work camps where families can serve our neighbors together as a family. We call our work group worship teams because the work we do together is no less significant of an offering of gratitude than the song we sing at a Sunday morning worship service. Groups usually come for a week in the summer or a weekend in the fall or spring. Groups range from 15-30 people and stay in the dormitory inside the Hannah House located on the Good Works Luhrig Road property. All groups must provide their own food, will have access to our kitchen and most groups bring a cook with them as part of their team. Worship teams are engaged "hands on" experiences both on our properties and at the homes of widows and citizens struggling with poverty in rural Appalachian Ohio. If you would like to make contact with a leader of a group who has already been to Good Works, let us know and we can provide you with some contact information.
WEEK OF SERVICE
Good Works also provides a ONE WEEK INTERNSHIP opportunity for anyone entering the 11th grade and older. This experience provides leadership training to an individual who wants to serve others and/or "test out" their call to missions by serving together with us. Interns shadow one our interns and participate as leaders with the work groups. There is no cost for this amazing opportunity. Good Works provides housing, food, training and the opportunity to serve.
