Neighboring 101

A study and discussion about the broad issues of loving and serving people in poverty.

It is the JOY of the Good Works staff to invite YOU to join us as we discuss COMMUNITY and service to the poor. We would love for our NEIGHBORS to come and share their passions and struggles as we all seek to be better NEIGHBORS.
In the fall of 2007, we began to create an on-going dialogue in our neighborhood and in the body of Christ about the broad issues that affect the poor and our own individual and community responsibility as their neighbors.
The first in this series we read the book Bridges out of Poverty by Dr. Ruby K. Payne, Philip E. DeVol and Terie Dreussi Smith. A group of 20-25 of us met together each week to discuss how we as neighbors might build bridges of hope to assist people in breaking out of poverty. We talked about classism and mentoring and read many case studies. We shared our own stories of struggle, perseverance, and successes. The dialogue was very rich because many people participated.
In the Spring of 2008, we continued with another session of Neighboring 101 studying Amy L. Sherman’s book Sharing God’s Heart for the Poor. A group of 15-20 of us met together for a very rich discussion of several biblical passages.

During the fall of 2008, we plan to continue with another study and discussion by reading the book CHURCHES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE: REACHING YOUR COMMUNITY WITH GOOD NEWS AND GOOD WORKS by Ron Sider, Phillip Olson and Heidi Rolland Unruh.

The study will begin with a lunch provided by the Good Works Timothy House staff. The Timothy House is located at 91 Central Avenue in Athens. Interested participants are asked to RSVP Andrea Horsch by e-mail (andrea@good-works.net) or by telephone (740.594.3333).
Participants are encouraged to arrive between 11:30 am and noon with the study beginning at 12:05. Lunch will be provided at no cost. All Neighboring Discussions will take place on Thursday’s from 12-1 pm
